Emanuel Ax Performs Variations And Etudes By Beethoven, Haydn, Schumann And Copland On New Sony Classical Release

Recording Available January 22, 2013

Variations Features Three Works Never Before Recorded By The Pianist

NEW YORK, Jan. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – Sony Classical is proud to announce a new recording by pianist Emanuel Ax of four significant sets of Variations by four titanic composers: Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann, and Copland.  Variations is available on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

One of the best known classical musicians of our time and winner of multiple Grammy awards for both solo and chamber performances, Ax believes that the Variations format is the great composer’s way of showing consummate artistry. “I think people like Beethoven, Haydn, and Schumann show what great compositional virtuosos they are in these pieces.”

The pianist points out that each of these sets of Variations is unusual, “each revolutionary in its own way.” He has also discovered that they go very well together in a concert program. Now, surely to the worldwide delight of fans of virtuoso classical piano performance, he presents them together on a recording as well.

The album features Beethoven’s Variations and Fugue for Piano in E-flat major, Op. 35, commonly known as the Eroica Variations because it’s built partly on the famous theme of the Eroica Symphony. It also includes Haydn’s Andante with Variations in F minor (Hob. XVII:6), also known as the Keyboard Sonata “Un piccolo divertimento.”

The Symphonic Etudes Op. 13 by Robert Schumann, a very difficult piece and a recent addition to the pianist’s repertoire, round out the CD version of the release. However, a bonus track of the great American composer Aaron Copland’s Piano Variations is also included with purchase of a digital download only. Mr. Ax describes this less well known piece as “very ‘in your face’ – there are beautiful things in it and it’s a very powerful piece, and [in the opening] it’s a real expression of the piano as a percussion instrument.”

In the pianist’s life, says Mr. Ax, “we’re so centered on the sonata style. What’s nice sometimes is to look at other ways to deal with structure, other ways to deal with expression, other ways to deal with forming your thoughts.” As a great and longtime admirer of the Variations idea, he is perhaps the ideal interpreter to bring this love to life in the recording studio. These pieces also represent the planned repertoire of some of his upcoming solo performances. (In addition, Mr. Ax is an Artist in Residence with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center for much of its 2012-2013 season.)

12 ORIGINAL RECORDINGS CONTINUE A CONCEPTUAL NARRATIVE ARC STARTED ON VAI’S ACCLAIMED REAL ILLUSIONS: REFLECTIONS ALBUM

LOS ANGELES, May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai will release The Story of Light , a new solo album of original material, on August 14 . The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment , the label Vai founded in 1999.  Its sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist’s acclaimed 2005 album Real Illusions: Reflections (also Vai’s most recent solo studio release).

Although The Story of Light is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists including singer-songwriter Aimee Mann —dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam,” which she also co-wrote—and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice.  McClellan appears on “John the Revelator,” a track inspired by a vintage recording of blues singer Blind Willie Johnson , whose acid-soaked vocals are in the mix as well.  Other highlights include the title track (which opens the album), “Gravity Storm,” “The Moon and I,” and “Velorum.”

Throughout, three-time GRAMMY-winner Vai’s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners’ minds in equal measure.  The Story of Light follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.

“I’m always pursuing knowledge, I’m a seeker of spiritual equilibrium—and music is a big part of that,” says Vai. “I’ve been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.” Looking ahead, Vai envisions a third set of songs that will unravel the mysteries and reveal truths that swirl through both The Story of Light and Real Illusions: Reflections.  The completed trilogy, intended to be cinematic—even operatic—in scope, will include lyrics and narration.

The Story of Light is available as of today for online pre-sale orders.  This special pre-sale selection of bundled packages is offered exclusively through Vai’s website, www.Vai.com , where complete details on the products and ordering information are available.  Each package includes an instant download of a track from the new album personally selected by Vai, “Gravity Storm.”

Following up the 2009 live album Where The Wild Things Are, The Story of Light is Vai’s 16th solo effort.  In support of its release, Vai will begin a tour of North America on August 15th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, accompanied by his band—who are also featured on the new album: Dave Weiner (guitar), Jeremy Colson (drums), Philip Bynoe (bass), and Deborah Hensen (harp, vocals, keyboards).
